Kernel oops on boot with 4.12.4-1-ARCH

Hi all.

I'm new to Arch and ARM ( long history of x86 on Gentoo ). I've installed ( 3 times now ) as per instruction at https://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv7/freescale/cubox-i and made the following changes:

When prompted by the uboot-cubox-i package, I answered Y to flash uboot. I then edited /boot/boot.txt and hardcoded the root= part to read root=/dev/mmcblk1p1 ( the previous value it was getting was /dev/mmcblk0p1 ... which also did not boot ). I did this because of comments in https://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=11389. The script seems to generate the name of the root device, but if this is run from a 3.x kernel, and the names change in 4.x, then it's not clear how this script would get the correct value. So then I ran the ./mksrc script.

On the 1st boot ( no serial console ), the kernel didn't boot. On the 2nd boot ( console attached ), it booted! I though "Yay! I just need a serial console attached to boot ... I can live with this". But then I tried rebooting, and was back to the beginning ... can't boot. So here's the kernel oops I get now:

It was oops-ing in a very similar fashion ( to my raw eyeballs anyway - I didn't save it ) *before* I made the change to the root device name ( in a previous installation ). I guess, based on this, and the fact that it successfully booted once, that the problem is not the root device name, but something else. Any ideas?

OK so I've managed to get it to boot reliably. It seems that the Cubox doesn't like my trackball ( logitech ) being plugged into one of the USB ports. I swapped the keyboard and trackball around, and now it boots. Hooray!

IIRC the kernel you installed is for original cubox, not the cubox-i
