CuBox-i4 & ArchLinuxARM WiFi Can't Connect

Postby LDighera » Thu Mar 13, 2014 9:54 pm

Hello,

Attempting to connect to my WiFi routers fails. They are configured WPA2 and usually not broadcasting SSID, however during this testing phase, I have enabled SSID broadcasting for NETGEAR32.

Here is my wpa_supplicant.conf file:$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '##### wpa_supplicant configuration file: LGD Mon Mar 10 13:23:51 PDT 2014
ctrl_interface=DIR=/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=wheel

Attempts to run $this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'wpa_supplicant -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -iwlan0 -d ') fail with the following wpa_supplicant debug output:$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'wpa_supplicant v2.1

Uncommenting the 'scan_ssid=0' line in the NETGEAR32 network block of the wpa_supplicant.conf file results in periodic issuance of: 'brcmfmac: ERROR @brcmf_cfg80211_scan : scan error (-11)' messages on the console.

That's about the sum of the diagnostic information I'm able to provide.

I've been hacking at this issue for days without success, so I'm soliciting the assistance of willing wizards.

Re: CuBox-i4 & ArchLinuxARM WiFi Can't Connect

Following my own advice, I attempted to re-gen the ArchLinuxARM system on a Sony micro SDHC UHS-I 8GB SD card using the instructions here: http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv7/freescale/cubox-I#qt-platform_tabs-ui-tabs2. I did this twice and received the same error both times:$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'U-Boot SPL 2013.10-rc4-gefc4835 (Feb 18 2014 - 23:43:43)

So, the issue may be with the instructions, the u-boot version in the Arch distro, or hardware, or some incompatibility with the SD card. Frustrating...

All clues welcome.

It is loading uboot and SPL off the card.
Mount on another PC and see what's in first partition.

The issue was apparently caused by the Sony micro SDHC UHS-I 8GB SD card, because generating the Arch Linux system on a Samsung 16GB micro SDHC UHS-I card succeeded in booting.

I ran wifi-menu several times, and failed to connect to either of my routers.

While attempting to connect with wifi-menu, I am receiving these errors on the serial terminal: $this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'brcmfmac: ERROR @__brcmf_cfg80211_scan : Connecting : status (9)
brcmfmac: ERROR @brcmf_cfg80211_scan : scan error (-11)
brcmfmac: ERROR @brcmf_run_iscan : error (-3)
') And these on tty1: $this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'brcmfmac: ERROR @brcmf_run_iscan : error (-3)
brcmfmac: ERROR @brcmf_run_iscan : error (-3)
brcmfmac: ERROR @__brcmf_cfg80211_scan : Connecting : status (9)
brcmfmac: ERROR @brcmf_cfg80211_scan : scan error (-11)
brcmfmac: ERROR @brcmf_run_iscan : error (-3)
')I suppose diagnosing these errors would require manually parsing the Broadcom driver source.

I searched, and found a message here: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/71517/brcmsmac-does-not-work a response to which provided a link to the driver source: http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/brcm80211#Broadcom_brcmfmac_driver. Now I'm over my head.

In any event, I wouldn't expect to see those wireless driver/firmware error messages from a freshly generated system distribution. I'm beginning to suspect hardware issues...

As always, all clues very much appreciated.

Get this file
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'wget http://download.openbricks.org/cuboxi/firmware-wifi-brcm80211_20140206-d7f8a7c81a3-1_armv7.opk')
Change extension to zip, there in the data file in it, extract and put files in /usr/lib/firmware/brcm

Edit, don't change to zip
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'ar x firmware-wifi-brcm80211_20140206-d7f8a7c81a3-1_armv7.opk')

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pepedog', 'w')ifi-menu does a nice job of creating the profile in /etc/netctl

My experience with wifi-menu was miserable. The profiles it creates have missing fields and the special-quoting rules mentioned at the end of the netctl.profile man page aren't followed, especially for hidden SSIDs. I had to do significant hand debugging of the profiles created by wifi-menu to connect.

Now that I've got a wireless IP address, I still am not connected to the internet. Here's where I am as of a day's work today: $this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', ' wlan0 IEEE 802.11abg ESSID:"NETGEAR32"

I'm thinking that now the issue is with the fact that I'm still receiving error messages on the console from the Broadcom brcmfmac driver: $this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'brcmfmac: ERROR @brcmf_cfg80211_get_station : Could not get rssi (-2)

pepedog, the file you mention above is no longer there, and I am getting the error message about missing brcmfmac4330-sdio.txt:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
[ 5.995838] brcmfmac: brcmf_sdio_get_fw: fail to request firmware brcm/brcmfmac4330-sdio.txt (-2)
')

The file is indeed missing from /lib/firmware/brcm. In fact, there are no .txt files there at all, just bin and fw files.

This was working under the older 3.0 kernel, but I just upgraded and got 3.10.30-15 and wlan0 is not appearing, no doubt due to this failure at boot. Where else can I get the missing files?
