ODROID-U3 Fan Control

Hello,
I am running an Odroid-U3 as a headless server. I haven't installed X. The ODROID seems to be turning off the HDMI port (putting the monitor to sleep?) after about 20 minutes or so, the problem is when this happens the fan speeds up and won't stop. If I press a button on the keyboard and wake it up the fan immediately stops and goes on and off intermittently.

I have tried suggestions from https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=33497 however they either don't make a difference or the files they suggest to edit don't exist.

Any help would be much appreciated.

setterm should work (avoiding the monitor blanking at all). Have you explored it's manpage?

Does the odroid start sucking more power/get hotter when it blanks the screen?
