some samsung chromebook questions

Postby scrawler » Sun Mar 19, 2017 9:36 pm

hi guys,

I have two usb sticks prepared. I'm running from one of them now. I have it set up pretty much to taste and have been keeping it updated. I booted from the other stick, and DDed this one to mmcblk0 on another samsung 1 cb. Other than the bootup being veeerrrrry slow, it seemed to work fine. I was running arch with no sticks or cards stuck anywhere. When I booted again later, all I could get was the chrome recovery screen. What am I doing wrong?

Let me check myself:
- booted with sda2 as root, I DDed /dev/sdb to /dev/mmcblk0. does that sound right?

I already restored chromeos to the other cb, but I'm obviously not doing something quite right...

thanks

You would be best to boot from the USB, and do an installation to the mmc, as opposed to DD'ing over, as things might not align correctly to block sizes, etc.

Hey, thank you.

I have two issues with that--one, I'm not sure how to install from a running stick to the mmc, and also, I'd like to do the install to like 20 chromebooks, and would like to streamline the process as much as possible...

dd is an imperfect method for backups, especially when using different source and destination mediums. Consider doing one install to eMMC, then DD'ing that.

As for how to install to the eMMC from USB? Boot to USB, install to eMMC, per the instructions, just with the different device name.

Does not boot. The only difference between what I did and what the instructions say is that I used mmcblk0 instead of 1. There is no mmcblk1 on this machine. Any suggestions?

If there is no mmcblk1 .. then you don't have an SD card in.

The internal storage is mmcblk0.
