Odroid XU4 hangs during boot with new kernel (4.14.141-1)

Postby iefbr14 » Sun Sep 01, 2019 7:39 am

Did a "pacman -Syu" on my XU4 before going to sleep -- only new package is linux-odroid-xu3-4.14-141-1

Went ahead and installed it -- installed cleanly. Rebooted. XU4 hangs during boot. :cry: My UART module is at work and the XU4 is headless so I couldn't dig too deep into it -- plus its well past my bedtime now!

Ended up attaching the XU4's eMMC to the eMMC-USB adaptor and plugging it into a Pi3. Chroot'd in to the mounted filesystem and downgraded the XU4 kernel back to the previous package -- linux-odroid-xu3-4.13.133-1. Re-installed the eMMC into the XU4 and it boots up normally again.

Will investigate further when I have a way to see the boot console. Will post here if I can track down what might be going on.

Just wanted to post in case anybody else runs into the same issue -- you are not alone. :geek:

Same here.

Can you say where I can download old kernel? I haven't it in pacman cache.

...at least I'm not the only one having the problem. :(

Still haven't done any investigation, but site mentioned here viewtopic.php?f=30&t=9542 has the old packages.

I took a look over at the official Odroid Ubuntu forum for the XU4 to see if anybody there is experiencing a similar issue.. I found this thread:

https://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=95&t=36234

Based on absolutely nothing but intuition, this sounds like the same problem. :P

My XU4 is also running from a red eMMC and that seems to the the problem for people in that thread. I did not attempt the suggested "replace the zImage file". Seems likely Odroid will be applying a fix to their repo which Archlinuxarm should pick up shortly after. I'll wait until Pacman tells me there is a 4.14.141-2 available.

I upgraded my xu4 today at 2:11pm EDT with no problems. It upgraded:

[2019-09-01 14:11] [ALPM] upgraded hwids (20190316-1 -> 20190818-1)
[2019-09-01 14:11] [ALPM] upgraded kbd (2.0.4-2 -> 2.2.0-3)
[2019-09-01 14:11] [ALPM] upgraded libogg (1.3.3-3 -> 1.3.4-1)
[2019-09-01 14:11] [ALPM] upgraded linux-odroid-xu3 (4.14.133-1 -> 4.14.141-1)
[2019-09-01 14:11] [ALPM] upgraded linux-odroid-xu3-headers (4.14.133-1 -> 4.14.141-1)
[2019-09-01 14:11] [ALPM] upgraded perl-net-dns (1.20-3 -> 1.21-1)
[2019-09-01 14:11] [ALPM] upgraded syslog-ng (3.22.1-1 -> 3.23.1-1)

I no longer run off of emmc. Instead I have /boot and all the sd_fusing files on an sd card and the root dir / on a $20 120GB SSD connected via USB 3.0. The SSD has Part1 16GB, Part2 16GB, Part3 79GB (only 111GB available after format). I can have different root dirs in Part1 and Part2 and change which I boot by changing root=PARTUUID=<partition id> of bootargs in boot.txt. Better performance too. hdparm -t give 350 MB/s for buffered disk reads.

ETA: Just read the linked thread and see there was a fix before I upgraded for a voltage issue. My zImage is dated Aug 31 12:03. As I am not using EMMC, maybe that is why I was not affected.

Yeah, I think the issue only affects people with a specific revision of eMMC on the XU4. Some eMMC and all SD card users had no issue.

In any case I see Archlinux Arm has already pushed out a new kernel -- 4.14.141-2.

I went ahead and installed it and my XU4 is booting normally with my 16GB red eMMC.

Thank you ALARM guys for cranking out that fix so quick. I didn't even have to go into work to get my UART board. ;)
