Permanent Installation on Samsung XE503C32

Postby mind5t0rm » Sat Mar 27, 2021 6:41 am

Hello forum members. I did a quick search and I can't find any topic describing the process to install Arch as a permanent OS on this Chromebook.

I would prefer to have Arch as the main OS as there is no update on ChromeOS for more than 2 years on this model and it's really slow as well as it is annoying to have to constantly hit the Ctrl+U to boot in an external drive.

Any guide or help would be highly appreciated.

I thought that I recall the installation guide having a way to install it on the internal SSD. I have a misgiving about it though.

If the battery runs down completely, the system goes out of developer mode, and also resets the software switch to allow it to boot an alternate OS.
I don't know how to both of those set from a state where the system is not allowing it to boot. So I've always kept Arch on an SD card, and once or twice I've run the battery out, and had to boot into ChromeOS in developer mode to reset that switch. (The name of which escapes me at the moment.)

Does anyone have a solution to that issue? (Sorry if I've sidetracked you)

I see, thanks for the heads-up

I wasn't aware about the issue with the battery but I guess I could live with that. No need to completely drain the battery.

I think that in the installation guide mentions only the USB/microSD solution but nothing about the internal drive but I might be mistaken too.

There's no need to drain the battery, but if you (as I indeed did) put it to sleep, and forget about it for a while, the battery gets drained. That's why I'm hesitant. I'd love to find a way to do this without ChromeOS on the machine in some way.
