X11 not starting

Postby giacombum » Thu Sep 17, 2015 9:35 pm

I've installed arch on my Odroid U2 to obtain a perfect download machine: I want a desktop environment to automatically launch after login JDownloader and deluge torrent client.

If I connect via ssh -X to my odroid I can start JDownloader, but the X session won't start on the Odroid: here is my /var/log/Xorg.0.log

I want to start automatically lxde at boot, so I've installed lxde and I created a .xinitrc file in my home with

What does it means? Why the operation is not permitted?

I don't understand why the operation is not permitted: is something related to wrong permissions, wrong user/group behaviour or wrong xorg/xinit/systemd settings? Or something more? How can I investigate?

Is the Xorg.log you posted generated when using lxdm or some other method like startx ?

The log is showing other permission errors$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '[ 354.881] (EE) systemd-logind: failed to take device /dev/input/event2: Operation not permitted

You maybe need a Display manager ?. I think the LXDE group package comes with the lxdm display manager.

To start X with lxdm
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'systemctl start lxdm.service')

To start automatically at boot
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'systemctl enable lxdm.service')

Post the output of
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'ls -al /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service')

I've done all the steps that you suggest:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
m-(~)-(3 files, 104Kb)--> ls -al /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 39 Sep 8 18:23 /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service -> /usr/lib/systemd/system/lightdm.service
')

but still no X at boot. This is my new Xorg.0.log, after all the commands above:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '

Re: X11 not starting

And what happened when you ran systemctl start lxdm.service ?

You've done something wrong as your output from ls -al /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service shows a symlink pointing at lightdm which is a different display manager. If you want lightdm as your Display Manager fine but I think you have to install a 'greeter'

Your Xorg log is different now. It does not show the previous permissions errors. I think you were trying to start X as a normal user before which , from memory, does not work without effort anymore.

You should read the arch wiki some more and make sure you have configured whichever display manager you chose correctly.
