Booting Arch from MicroSD Fails

Postby tokenwizard » Sun Jan 12, 2014 9:19 pm

I wanted to post to one of the several other threads regarding this, but they all seem Locked.

I have tried about a dozen times to run through the Install Guide for creating a MicroSD card that will boot Arch on the BBB. Every time it fails. If I connect to a HDMI Monitor, I don't even get initial boot display, much less any type of error messages that I can see.

I should say that it boots/displays fine with the Angstrom Distro on the EMMC as well as the MicroSD.

I ready through several other threads and tried suggestions on then, including using the 5V AC Adapter shipped with the BBB, Adding a couple different lines/settings to the uEnv.txt, etc, but nothing seems to work. It boots up to a heartbeat LED0 and a faint flickering on LED2, but never shows up with lsusb on the Arch laptop that I have it connected to. It also never shows up in /dev.

I'm at a loss as to what to try next. I am very familiar with Arch on the laptop/desktop and have successfully installed it on my ARM Chromebook as well as my Raspberry Pi. I am getting really frustrated with this BBB install.

Any additional advice?

Give it an ethernet connection. Only ethernet is preconfigured in our image.

I just thought of that. lol. Yeah I can confirm that I had ethernet connection. So you mean, that there is no HDMI/Video output set up by default either?

I'm wondering if the archlinuxarm install instructions should be updated to include two key things:

A. There is no Display Output configured by default

B. Where it says "After the system is booted, you can SSH to the IP that gets assigned and login with the user/pass: root/root." maybe it could specify via Ethernet.

Maybe I'm a bit thick as to not realizing that, but I bet this has caused confusion for others, as well. I was trying to use the USB?One-wire connection.

Either way. Thanks for your response!

I've installed xorg-server, xorg-xinit, and xorg-utils as well as several xf86 drivers but still cannot get HDMI to work at all. I mean, even during the boot process I get NOTHING on the screen. Is there something else that needs to be done to get HDMI OUtput enable in this alarm build? I remember it working out of the box on the RPi.

Does this have anything to do with the capemgr enable/disable options in uEnv.txt or do those strictly apply to "cape" devices?
