[BeagleBone Black] 7" 800x480 HDMI display output problems

Dear community,
I am facing problems with HDMI output on 7" 800x480 LCD panel with HDMI adapter (http://www.watterott.com/en/7-800x480-H ... tive-touch) and looking for any possible hints or advices. To describe my environment, I am using newest version of kernel and packages:

Regarding HDMI, I should state that on regular monitors HDMI output works just fine, therefore I believe that device tree bindings are OK. What more, with stock beaglebone debian 3.8 build even the LCD display works, so it is not damaged. As seen above I am using general am335x-boneblack.dtb bindings, just with minor changes (blue-and-red-wiring = "crossed"; for lcdc node and video-ports = <0x234501>; for tda19988 node), without these, even regular monitors will not work. Tried to look trough all possible documentation (mostly here http://elixir.free-electrons.com/linux/ ... lay/tilcdc) on how to set display-timings and panel-info for this new device tree format, but found nothing, seems like it is not used anymore. All besides dtb's that's left is kernel stuff, so lets look on dmesg output:

What bothers me is that dmesg kernel outputs looks fine and almost identical in both cases, regular monitors just find their respective CEA mode. Also in both cases framebuffer /dev/fb0 appears, but 7" LCD shows nothing. Using fbset I can see something like:

Strange is, that timings are zeroed both with regular monitors and my display. Trying to set them using fbset yields:

As a last step, I tried to provide EDID binary to /usr/lib/firmaware/edid/800x480.bin and used drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/800x480.bin kernel argument and also experimented with nomodeset argument according to Documentation/EDID/HOWTO.txt but without success. That was the end of my experiments, as a next step I am planning to modify framebuffer's modedb.c file by adding my resolution and timings as a valid CEA extension and recompiling the kernel as this seems to be only one difference between working regular monitors and this display. Beasides this, I do not know what to try next, I believe that it is worth to solve this issue for future references and usage. Offcourse I could stick to different working distro or kernel, but this does not solve the underlying problem. Any ideas, anyone?

Hello,
I've got another findings from my journey over the HDMI adapter with 7" LCD. This time I was trying to add my 800x480 resolution and timings as a CEA mode to modedb.c, then by modification of original linux-am33x PKGBUILD I added my diff file as a patch to apply it during makepkg prepare stage, the same way as other patches (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/archl ... x/PKGBUILD). At the time of writing I already know that this change has no real effect, the CEA extension difference comes from EDID data not from modedb. I have gone trough the rebuild process anyway and I think I should let you know about my findings.
Here it goes:
Arch arm environment prepared, first run of makepkg, first problem. I do not know why, but git apply on arm is probably buggy, and results with:

Used arm git versions were (2.13.0 and 2.10.2), according to google this issue is usually related to case mismatch problems, but as far as I investigated filest to patch there was no such change. The worst part of this is, that PKGBUILD prepare stage is ruined by this error as is whole build. Also tried to modify script and use patch utility instead of git apply, but it does not support binary modifications which are present in diffs, so this was another mistake. Surprisingly, I tried to reproduce patching on my Arch desktop PC (git version 2.12.2) and it was successful! So I basically executed all prepare stage commands along with CEA patch on my desktop pc, then copied patched sources to my BBB arm environment and executed:

Probably nothing wrong, but it affects tilcdc, maybe old devicetree removal?

googled for -Wno-unit_address_vs_reg, and found that this options is probably only recognized by dtc v1.4.2 or later. Current dependency alarm/dtc-overlay is of version 1.4.1-1 though. So I changed it to community/dtc 1.4.4-1 and continued again, this was good run until _package-headers stage came, outputs:

Seems like there is a newline between rm -rf and those unneeded architectures, made proper modifications to PKGBUILD and continued with

makepkg --repackage -f

and voila, package made. It was thorny path a bit, but finally done. As mentioned above, I will submit the bugreport to the PKGBUILD issues, but to document my steps a bit more in relation to this subject, I posted it here too.

Nothing seems more obvious to me even after next several days of experiments. Well, now I am convinced to study thoroughly drm and tilcdc kernel sources together with RC Nelson's patch to pinpoint the problem, set up distcc to fasten build times and get more information out of it. I also plan to measure HDMI electrical signals going out of the device.

Hello,
while studying sources, I realized, that my initial dmesg outputs from first post were carried out with drm.debug set to too low level. So for those interested, I am attaching new more detailed dmesg output via pastebin https://pastebin.com/EWCuN2bV. Also did update to newest kernel 4.11.1-1 which came out recently.
