[BBB] Reboot/halt problem

Postby Alvadorn » Thu Jun 15, 2017 9:10 pm

Hi guys, I have a problem with features about shutdown: reboot and halt/poweroff.
When I try to use one of shutdown commands my BBB close the ssh connection, never shutdown (in fact I dont know if it really shutdown) and it starts to reject new ssh connections.

For example:

To break this shutdown eternity I have to pull off power cable and insert it again, but sometimes I need to reboot BBB remotely and I can't do this physical thing.
Is there a way to fix the reboot?

Please connect a serial UART to get a console, and see what the final output is before it becomes unreachable.

My BBB was also remote (at in-laws place for ssh access) but I recovered it today to check out this problem. I noticed that if I leave a ping running from my PC to the BBB while I do a sudo reboot via ssh then the ping keeps going completely uninterrupted. So the problem is that the BBB never actually shuts down. Looking in the journal later I see the last message is "Journal stopped" so that is no help. I run this out of the eMMC and have little free space so I had unfortunately purged the pacman pkg cache. Otherwise I would roll back the last couple of linux-am33x kernel updates. I did roll back linux-firmware 20170422.ade8332-1 -> 20170309.695f2d6-1 but that made no difference.

I have ordered a TTL to USB serial adaptor online to do as WarheadsSE asks but that will take a week to arrive.

Just found this viewtopic.php?f=57&t=11770.

Looks like it is the kernel, since the upgrade 4.10.* to 4.11.*. Found at old copy of linux-am33x-4.10.9-1-armv7h.pkg.tar.xz on the net, installed that and the problem goes away.

Got myself a FTDI serial board and did an sudo poweroff using current linux-am33x 4.11.8-1 which fails and captured this console output http://ix.io/yki/. For comparison, I did it again with 4.10.9-1 which works and got http://ix.io/ykj/.

Looks to me like systemd-udevd is locking up on some kind of mutex.

Just tried current linux-am33x 4.12.5-1 to see if this problem has been fixed but still hangs on reboot with that version. Went back to 4.10.9-1. Nobody has any suggestions about where to report this bug etc?

Strange, my BBB is on 4.12.4-1 and its behaving fine. So suspect its something local to your set up ...

@summers, well it must also be "local" to the original poster here. And to the guy that posted in the other recent thread viewtopic.php?f=57&t=11770 about the same issue.

Thinking about it, usually updates on my BBB, happen when I halt the BBB; because I'm rebooting the NSA325 that its plugged into. Shall have to try a straight reboot - and see what that does. [E.g. the BBB goes into halt, then has the power pulled]

I've access to a UART cable, so should be able to track whats happened (but alas not the time to do it ...). Gut feeling is its probably a change to the bit of the kernel that goes through the last stages of halt/reboot. So should be able to back track in the kernel updates, to see what changed over the update in kernel ...
