[BBB] Disable HDMI on kernels 4.10 and up

Postby dkgof » Thu Sep 14, 2017 6:59 am

Ive tried for a while now to figure out how HDMI is supposed to be disabled on the latest kernels 4.10 and up, since earlier you used either

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'bone_capemgr.disable_partno=BB-BONELT-HDMI')
or

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'fdtfile=am335x-boneblack-emmc-overlay.dtb')

Depending on the version of the kernel, but from 4.10 and forward those methods no longer work.

The file am335x-boneblack-emmc-overlay.dtb is simply not shipped with any of the new kernel packages.

Atm ive gone back to a 4.9 kernel and use the fdtfile method, which is fine. But i would like to be able to run the latest kernel.

Any insights as to if the method has changed yet again?

Not much of an insight, but latest official kernel on github.com/beagleboard/linux/ is 4.9 LTS release, following upstream closely.
While patches for later kernels are provided, there are major issues with these, e.g. kernel BUGs when loading overlays with capemgr and such, so I think sticking with official 4.9 might be the right thing, unless you absolutely need newer features.
Next kernel.org longterm should be 4.14, it seem likely that it might be next officially supported release for beagleboards as well.
