Wifi broken on newer kernel on BeagleBoneBlack Wireless

Postby svenstaro » Sun Aug 04, 2019 11:33 pm

I got a BeagleBoneBlack Wireless which has a wifichip that needs the wl18xx driver. All was working fine on linux-5.1.8-1 but on linux-5.2.5-2 wifi doesn't work anymore. The driver doesn't load by default anymore and the wifi interface is not visible. If I manually load the driver, the interface also won't show up. The system is fully up-to-date (except for linux, which I alternate between the last-known-working linux 5.1.8 and the known-bad linux 5.2.5-2.

Any ideas?

I can confirm this. For me also 5.1.15 was still working fine, I guess this was introduced with version 5.2.

I suspect that this has to do with the device tree since the device simply seems not to be available / found.

Update: I verified that it seems to be unfortunately not a device tree issue. Copying simply the device tree blob from a working kernel image did not solve the issue.

Also this issue unfortunately still persists even with the current version 5.2.7.

Nice try, though.
I really am not familiar with Linux Kernel internals sadly so I got absolutely no guess where the problem might stem from. :(

In the latest version of the kernel (5.3.1) this issue is fixed. Not sure what caused it and how it got fixed, regardless I am happy that it is gone.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll try it one of these days.
