Beaglebone Black Boot Problem - SD timeout? [SOLVED]

Postby guyc » Sat May 18, 2013 7:47 am

I have a new Beaglebone Black, and cannot get Arch Linux to boot from an SD card using the procedure described here: http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv7/beaglebone-black

I am using a 5V 2A external power supply, specifically this one from Adafruit: http://www.adafruit.com/products/276
and a USB/serial console cable, also from Adafruit: http://www.adafruit.com/products/70

The console log for the failed boot is here: http://pastebin.com/jS6xD9Mf You can see from the timestamps that there are significant periods with no activity, and ultimate it ends in a kernel panic.

It appears to me from the console log that the root of the failure is a timeout on the SD card.
The SD card is a Sandisk, and I can boot Angstrom from the same SD card prepared using both the "easy way" and "hard way" methods described here: http://downloads.angstrom-distribution.org/demo/beaglebone/

I've tried recreating the ArchLinux image several time to make sure I'm not missing anything, always with the same result.

Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,
Guy

I bought a new 4G microSD Card ('Dolphin' brand) and recreated the image
and it boots ArchLinux fine on the BBBlack. It seems the issue was with the
SD card. Take-home message: even if you can boot Angstrom from an
SD card, do not assume that ArchLinux will boot using the same card.
