Hmmmm that's really perplexing. Honestly, I think I had to try a couple times and it worked once and I don't know if I actually did anything different. One thing that I did do that the instructions didn't mention was to reboot after the wget step (in my mind I was freeing up RAM--dunno if that did anything) just before running bsdtar. I used a swapfile instead of swap partition but it's not different afaik. So it still doesn't work?

It worked once I increased the vm.min_free_kbytes value - I described that in the third post. Nothing else that I tried changed a thing...

Out of curiosity I'll probably try a clean install in the near future - the issue may be related to some particular version of some particular component - but now I need the board running (;
