BeagleBone unable to boot after pacman -Syu

Postby denjean » Thu Feb 18, 2016 10:44 pm

Hi,
after a pacman -Syu I am unable to boot a BeagleBone White.
The list of packages included a kernel.
The last message was something like waiting for root device uuid .....
I reinstalled from scratch the rootfs and u-boot and MLO according to the instructions for Beaglebone.
I then got the same error (waiting for root device)
This means that the latest ArchLinuxARM-am33x-latest.tar.gz is broken as well.
I have not been able to find an older version of ArchLinuxARM-am33x-latest.tar.gz
(http://archive.org/web/, mirrors, ...)
https://archive.archlinux.org is a good idea, only not arm.

With the latest rootfs and u-boot, if I change the root to /dev/sda1, I was able
to boot an old usb rootfs. So the latest rootfs cannot see /dev/mmclb0, but can see /dev/sda.
Installing an old u-boot and MLO with dd did not help.

Re: BeagleBone unable to boot after pacman -Syu

Postby denjean » Wed Feb 24, 2016 8:19 pm

Hi

Thx too the ArchlinuxARM Rollback Machine I was able to identify since when the rootfs for BB is broken.

The rootfs of 7 Feb 2016 still works, the rootfs of 9 Feb 2016 does not work. The one of 8 Feb is absent.

The working rootfs shows this about mmc:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
[] omap_hsmmc 48060000.mmc: Got CD GPIO
[] omap_hsmmc 48060000.mmc: unable to get vmmc regulator -517
[] mmc0: new high speed SDHC card at address 0007
[] mmcblk0: mmc0:0007 SD8GB 7.42 GiB
...
[] omap_hsmmc 48060000.mmc: Got CD GPIO
[] mmc0: host does not support reading read-only switch, assuming write-enable
[] mmc0: new high speed SDHC card at address 0007
[] mmcblk0: mmc0:0007 SD8GB 7.42 GiB
[] mmcblk0: p1 p2 p3 p4
')
The not working rootfs show this about mmc:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
[] omap_hsmmc 48060000.mmc: Got CD GPIO
[] Synopsys Designware Multimedia Card Interface Driver
...
[] omap_hsmmc 48060000.mmc: Got CD GPIO
')

Re: BeagleBone unable to boot after pacman -Syu

Postby denjean » Mon Feb 29, 2016 10:20 pm

Hi,

Solved by using old dtb =/boot/dtbs/am335x-bone.dtb
When copying old dtb from working rootfs of 2016/02/07 to rootfs of 2016/02/09 => mcc works.
Latest kernel upgrade to 4.4.3-1 has the same dtb as the one of 2016/02/09.
Same solution works.

Re: BeagleBone unable to boot after pacman -Syu

I narrowed the problem a bit, although it makes no sense to me. I compared the device trees and noticed a change at the mmc-entry. BUT: this was not the problem! So I checked on the other changes and got to
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '/ocp/i2c@44e0b000/tps@24/regulators/regulator@5')
Inside this node, there was an attribute $this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'regulator-compatible = "ldo3";') in the old device tree.

Actually, I tried some different combinations, to sort out further dependencies:
  • Use the old device tree, unmodified (e.g. WITH the attribute) -> works
  • Use the old device tree, removing the attribute -> does not work
  • Use the new device tree, adding the attribute -> works
In short, I think it's valid to conclude that the removal of the attribute caused the problem.
What I don't know is why this is causing problems. I know what the device trees are good for, I also know what regulators are good for, but I don't know the implications of all attributes.

As I don't know who is responsible for that change, I wrote an email to the package maintainer, maybe he can find out.

I talked to the maintainer, it's fixed in linux-am33x 4.4.5-1.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') talked to the maintainer, it's fixed in linux-am33x 4.4.5-1

Confirmed.
Big Thx !!!
