I'm waiting for the non rc version of linux-armv7 4.17..
Since older rc versions often showed the black screen..

I think the problem is caused by the package we receive from archlinux, not the kernel itself..
As I previously said, I think that the patches from here are somehow causing that: http://rcn-ee.com/deb/sid-armhf/
With kernel version 4.16 and onwards, the release version changed to: armv7-x0
Does someone of you know, what the patches should do?

Linux 4.18rc1 booting / but now graphics on any post-4.15

Postby vman » Mon Jun 18, 2018 7:48 pm

Hi CB5-311 users,

now with Mesa 18.1 and Tegra support in the official repos we really just need a working current kernel to finally have a great Linux notebook computer. :-)

I experimented a little more, and tried the rc1 of Linux 4.18. I did a "make tegra_defconfig", as described earlier in this thread. Trying to boot lead me to the familiar black screen... but after resetting, and going booting back to the working Linux 4.15, I could verify that booting Linux 4.18(rc1) had actually been successful:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'journalctl -b-1')
I'll attach the output both of this, and of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old. Maybe someone else can figure out what's going wrong? Or who should I ask? The #tegra channel?

Now I also have a USB network adapter, and I can ssh into the system when running the 4.18 kernel.

Slightly off topic: as a fan of ARM computers I also have a cubox-i, which happens to also have 4 GByte of ram. This machine does not support LPAE, though. The 4 GByte can still be used, but only when initialized correctly with the right version of u-boot. I don't understand the details of this, and I'm not interested as long as it's working... I was just thinking this might somehow be useful information for creating a kernel that works on non-lpae systems, and still lets our systems use their full 4 GByte.

To make my logs more accessible I uploaded them to http://freimarkt.org/nouveau/
I also asked at #tegra if anyone could interpret them, so as to point me to a solution.

@vman Any news on this?
Could you point me to where you post your tegra problems?
Is #tegra a mailing list?

@reey: #tegra is an IRC channel. I think people there are mostly actually developers, and they're not talking a lot. ;)
Someone replied to me, on June 21st, saying that he'd be having a meeting with someone else soon, who had worked on what might be my/ our issue: "as3722-regulator as3722-regulator: regulator 13 register failed -517"

I'll post here when I have a working kernel again, or more specific news!

@vman: Did you get any news on the issue?. Im trying to bisect the offending commit, but my time is limited. Now i can ssh to my chromebook with 4.16, but the screen is still back.

After my summer vacation I tried a recent kernel from git just one day before your post, @Manizuca! My new logs are here: http://freimarkt.org/nouveau/journal.4.19rc1.html

This is after I had posted on #tegra again, and a developer had suggested including the firmware or building the graphics driver as a module... but neither helped me. A few more questions and answers followed. If someone there comes up with another suggestion I'll try it. And in case of success I'll post it here!

I'm glad you're also still interested. I'm already looking at interesting new laptop computers, but I don't see anything too thrilling, and I don't think I can afford one to soon anyway...

@vman: So after some days of bisecting i found the offending commit: 17ab7806de0c10d27cdbda8ef57ca680bdd24315: "drm: don't link DP aux i2c adapter to the hardware device node".

Tried the latest 4.18 kernel, but it did fail for me again (probably another bug, as ssh didn't work neither). however, 4.19-rc1 works fine when reverting that commit.

As a update to my last post, now the gpu acceleration works with mainline mesa. xorg works fine, but wayland throws lots of errors (it did work with 4.15). im using mate, so i just need x11 anyway

Also, wifi didnt work for me with wpa_supplicant, but iwd works fine

Yeah! Thanks, Manizuca! I inserted the one line removed here: https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9516105/ ...and 4.18.5 is booting showing a picture on my system. :) Wifi was not working on the first boot with that system, but having a picture again is a good start. ;) I'll post this finding on the #tegra chat, and maybe they'll fix 4.19 for all users of this hardware.
