Upgrading / Choosing Linux Package, Nexus 7 (2012)

Postby grubenm » Sun May 03, 2015 1:07 am

Hey all, wasn't sure if this was a software or a hardware question.

I have a Nexus 7 (2012 edition) tablet running arch linux
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '$ uname -a
Linux alarm 3.1.10-8-nexus7 #17-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Thu Dec 6 14:51:52 UTC 2012 armv7l GNU/Linux
')

However, the linux package never updates, and indeed if I try to install linux, the following occurs
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '$ sudo pacman -S linux
:: There are 31 providers available for linux:

31) linux-zedboard')
Which leads me to suspect that I might have done some configuration incorrectly.

In short, my question is: how do I install the linux package appropriate for a Nexus 7 (2012), and remove whatever linux package the system is booting from currently?

Of course the linux package never updates.. that isn't our kernel
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '#17-Ubuntu')

I would have to see what is an options are for mainline, but I don't know how well they would play with the display drivers. Is this native or a chroot ?

Happy to answer your questions, but I'm afraid I don't perfectly understand them.

I followed the instructions on the nexus7setup, which I only provide because I hope it's helpful.

I'm happy to provide the output of any commands on the machine for you, or to provide specifications or configurations.

The answer is native. However, having glanced at that guide, I can't help you until I have had more time to review everything involved.

To summarize, in the hopes that my summary harmonizes with your later review, it appears that the salient points are as follows:
  • The Arch Linux image is obtained from the arch_20130626.mrom mentioned in the Installing the Arch Image section
  • That section references this post
  • That post asserts $this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')Inside the installation package is tar.gz archive from http://os.archlinuxarm.org/os/tegra/ and all modifications are done on the device after the archive is extracted (see post_install folder in the installer). This means you can update this package with unmodified tar.gz from archlinux website.
