Request please add watchdog (upstream moved it to aur)

Postby Strykar » Wed Feb 21, 2018 10:33 pm

This package moved from pkgs to aur in Archx64, almost every embedded device would want this.
I'm surprised Arch moved this to aur - https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/pack ... ab480b6dce

Package: watchdog (daemon)
AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/watchdog/

Seconded - I just moved to arch aarch64 for my Pi 3 fleet, and the Odroid c2's. I wouldn't consider a machine without the watchdog running as viable.

Note the systemd watchdog is not a replacement featurewise, sadly.

Thanks!

What the problem to install and use it from AUR? You can also request AUR package maintainer to add aarch64 or whatever architecture to the PKGBUILD if package builds fine.

Simple - it is less work for myself and lots of other embedded folks.

In a more complex way I now have to worry about installing a complete compiler chain into all 30+ SBCs in the fleet and script building it, or I have to setup a secondary repo and/or cross compile, etc. etc. etc.

All doable, of course, but I think a lot of people including myself just want watchdog to be available. Its similar to "why is package X in AUR vs. core or extra or community?" for pretty much any package in Arch.

You don't need to compile it onto X SBCs, you need _a_ SBC to build _a_ package, and then you can use the `devtools` package to manage a private repo over http(s)/ssh/nfs/etc.

I'm also interested in keeping the watchdog package in an official rep for my Raspberry Pis. Is it possible to add it to the AUR, just like omxplayer-git? If so, how can I help achieving this?

Kind regards,
Bernd
