Wayland

Postby rubenvb » Fri Feb 01, 2013 9:20 pm

Hi,

I'm new and all, and my rPi is still under way, but I wonder if anyone has tried running Wayland instead of X.

There's guides:
http://wayland.freedesktop.org/raspberrypi.html

and Arch x86 has packages (in the AUR):
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/wayland/
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/qt5-qtwayland-git/

It'd be awesome to see how this fares on low-resource devices. I understand the limited use it currently has, but I also understand the chicken-and-egg problem Wayland has: without a functional Wayland, why should anything be modified to use something that hasn't been shown to work?

Just imagine: XBMC running on Wayland. Smell the awesomeness. And yes... I know XBMC can't currently run on Wayland.

:( So far, I did not succeed to make it start using a RPi-B

Code: Select all
`--> uname -a
Linux RPi 3.6.11-11-ARCH+ #1 PREEMPT Tue May 14 16:12:58 UTC 2013 armv6l GNU/Linux

Right after starting "weston", the display flashes and outputs the following log :

Code: Select all
`--> weston-launch
Date: 2013-05-28 CEST
[22:59:44.831] weston 1.1.0

Look here for some clues. Looks like you need to specfy some raspberry specific libs at compile time.

Thanks for the tips; did not find the link.
In fact, I'm using the binary package, so I guess it's time to compile

There is AUR package that installs weston for Raspberry Pi (you can install wayland from official repositories): https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/weston-rbp/

Thanks for making that..

I wonder how long before mainline starts getting ticked about non-x86/64 packages.

They already do. I make it a point to be ruthlessly evil toward anyone that pulls that crap. We have our own bug system.
