Preparing a Boot USB for Unbranded NAS with PLX 7820

Postby CobraC » Tue Dec 31, 2013 2:22 pm

All,

I have an unbranded Single Bay NAS unit that has a PLX 7820 architecture. I am able to reach the web interface, which is very generic. I would like to be able to boot into Linux from the drive, so I have attempted to prepare as USB drive using information from sources such as http://zyxel.nas-central.org/wiki/Debian_without_need_to_flash and http://www.mikrocontroller.net/articles/P89626/usb_key_func.

Both sources indicate different filesystems for the USB. The first suggests vFAT while the other suggests ext2 or ext3. I have attempted both, each with and without making the USB stick bootable. After waiting about 30+ (to ensure any required packages are downloaded as suggested by the sites) I still cannot use telnet or ssh to connect to the device on its IP address.

Could anyone identify what I may be missing? Is the only option for me to obtain the SDK and compile new firmware for the unit?

Thanks in advance.

You'll really have to give us more information, and possibly find and attach to serial.

Thanks WarheadsSE for the quick response. The device only has Ethernet and USB ports. Unfortunately there isn't a serial port on the back and I could not locate any other ports when I took the device apart.

What "unbranded" device is this? I might be able to help, but I am potshotting and to be honest, that damn PLX chip is a complete PITA.. so I need to know what I am working with.

PITA! I felt the same in fact! It seems to be one of the unfriendlier ones that I have dealt with. So far, it hasn't fried itself however! It was a NAS unit I purchased from Taiwan (http://www.gm-tek.com/product_view.php?id=405&mode=36)
