Lost 2 Root passwords, help!

Postby Grumps » Fri Dec 09, 2011 1:05 pm

Hi All,

This is my first post here.

Issue1: Ok so I setup my dockstar about 7 months ago and set a password, and have subsequently lost it.

I mounted the usb on another linux box and followed - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Password_Recovery

I noticed in the etc directory there was two shadow files: shadow & shadow -

I changed the root so that it looked like: "root::14589::::::"

Is this incorrect? I noticed that 14589 didn't match the numbers in other user names. I believe it was 14587...

When I ssh into the box, and press enter at the password request I'm denied. Is there an cache that's not cleared on reboot? or is there a separate ssh file that needs to be cleared?

Issue2: I was just going to format the usb and start over, I removed the usb & booted the dockstar. Then I went to SSH into the box as Root and stxadmin and was denied. I don't recall ever changing the password. Is there anything I can do, besides breaking into the serial port? Do i really need to worry about this, I don't see a reason since I could just install using another linux distro, right?

Thanks so much for your help!

With a dockstar, you can just re-extract the rootfs onto a properly formatted drive, and plug it in.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WarheadsSE', 'W')ith a dockstar, you can just re-extract the rootfs onto a properly formatted drive, and plug it in.

Thanks! I figured I would do that. plus it's pretty out of date, I might just do a total wipe since I really didn't have much going on there.

Any thoughts on the password issue with just the OS on NAND running? I'm research now.
