Most stable DockStar kernel/system.

Postby codewarrior » Sat Feb 11, 2012 3:58 am

Hi.

I run my website off my dockstar, which I have been doing for over a year. It works great, but if I leave it running for more than about a month without rebooting, the filesystem gets corrupted. I am current at:
Linux debian 2.6.32-5-kirkwood #1 Sat Sep 18 15:20:08 UTC 2010 armv5tel GNU/Linux

I do not need the latest and greatest, rather I just want the most stable version. I see a few comments about the newest version having issues. So for the dockstar, which is my best bet(kernel version) for a stable system?

Thanks

I'm sorry, we don't support debian, as we aren't them.

Our main site has instructions for installation and downloads for a root filesystem you can use, but it's obvious from your uname that you're running Debian software, and we're not Debian.

If you're planning to switch over to this distribution, we'd be glad to help out where we can.

Actually I have 3 Dockstars, only one is use. So, yes I am more than willing to try another distribution, just need to know what to use. Guess I will start with the standard install directions and go from there. Wish me luck!

Guess you like this better:

Linux alarm 3.1.7-2-ARCH #1 PREEMPT Sat Jan 14 15:45:38 UTC 2012 armv5tel Feroceon 88FR131 rev 1 (v5l) Marvell SheevaPlug Reference Board GNU/Linux

Woot, it's alive.
Instructions were very good.

Will try to move my site over soon.
Guess 3.1.7-2-ARCH is the kernal. built Sat jan 14 ?

Thanks

Much easier on the eyes now :)

3.1.7 is just what shipped in that rootfs tarball. Run 'pacman -Syu' to upgrade the system, which will also pull in the latest kernel, 3.1.10-3.

You can also change your arcNumber in U-Boot to 2998, the ID for the Dockstar. You're still set to 2097.

You should also find this guide useful for figuring out pacman commands:

Will do that update, but one issue I had.

I did the install but wanted apache also. Apache installed ok but would not run, something about a missing lib, so I had to do this:
ln -s libpcre.so.0.0.1 libpcre.so.1

Create symbolic link, I'm not sure if the 0.0.1 is a compatible version but apache started up ok after I did that. Was there a better solution?

Many thanks.
Glen.

Solution is to keep your system up to date, pcre has been upgraded along with apache and that library is provided in the new version of pcre. Arch moves a lot faster than Debian, updating your system should be done regularly.

Removed the symbolic link.
Did the pacman system upgrade.
Had one issue, upgrade failed since it said /etc/profile.d/locale.sh existed.
So I just renamed it local.sh.o and tried again, seemed to work ok.
apache started without issue after upgrade.

Funny thing, upgrade moved me to Chicago, the timezone that is, from Toronto. Guess the dockstar wanted to be further south.

uname -a
Linux alarm 3.1.10-3-ARCH #1 PREEMPT Sat Feb 11 03:57:49 UTC 2012 armv5tel Feroceon 88FR131 rev 1 (v5l) Marvell SheevaPlug Reference Board GNU/Linux

I did not understand that comment about U-Boot. Change what? I assume UBoot is bootloader on the dockstar that loads linux kernal.
