Pogoplug Pink - Rsync for shared hosting backup - viable?

Postby greenman » Tue Apr 17, 2012 9:05 pm

I just found out my shared hosting provider isn't backing up nightly. That leaves me with a gap in my backup plan.
I figured I'd get a pogoplug, install arch linux and have it rsync/mysql-dump several websites via cron during the middle of the night onto a local usb harddrive. Then I'd set it up to zip the rsynced websites during the day, maybe once a week, and store the five-most-recent zips.

Shouldn't the pogoplug work fine for this application?

Sure, just be sure to not go over your data cap, use compression, and likely it would be best to use openssl-cryptodev for hardware encryption acceleration (adding the cryptodev module to rc.conf .. but that is in the forums [search])

Thanks, WarheadsSE. I'll be sure to install openssl-cryptodev and add it to the rc.conf. Cheers.
