Attach the drive to a linux computer (live CD/USB or VM works) and edit the file.

It's a SATA drive, is it not? Maybe a GoFlex USB attachment, or attach SATA data & power?

lessons i learned dont assume that some ones instruction as are correct ask questions??
when changing permissions on a dir in this case my media server directories make sure you can browse them.
i was unable to play media because it did not have the appropriate permissions to browse the Dir.
things i would like to solve...
faster NFS transfer rates i am stuck at 12 to 16 mbs though my 3oo mb wifi connection

Mode: Master | SSID: OpenWrt5g
BSSID: ff:uu:cc:kk:uu:00 | Encryption: WPA PSK (TKIP, CCMP)
Channel: 149 (5.745 GHz) | Tx-Power: 17 dBm
Signal: -51 dBm | Noise: -95 dBm
Bit Rate: 240.0 MBit/s | Country: CA

what are other people getting with the same device for transfer rates how can i improve this...

16MB/s or 16mb/s ? 300mbps = 37MBps max theoretical, before overhead, etc. with ideal speeds at both ends, including disk transfers. Remember there is only 128M RAM in the device too. This is NFS, right?

Ohh ok i guess i am squeezing all i can out of this little system. yes it is NFS with an ext3 file system.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'david@solaris:~$ time dd if=/dev/zero of=/home/david/nfsdownloads/testfile bs=64K count=1000
1000+0 records in
1000+0 records out
65536000 bytes (66 MB) copied, 4.31369 s, 15.2 MB/s

real 0m4.405s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.072s
')

it seems i get no change by using 1000mb lan port with my laptop

18MB/s is maximum theoretical throughput over wireless with @300Mb/s (or 16.85MB/s @270Mb/s connection) as wireless is half duplex. What you are getting is great actually. I get 12-13 MB/s over 5GHz band with no other 5GHz routers in range.
