Minor problem: Samba & Windows

Postby eschofer » Thu Jul 12, 2012 3:09 am

Help would be appreciated:

I just reinstalled archlinux on my Pogo E02 from scratch after a power outage rendered my usb flash drive unreadable. (Note to self: be sure to regularly back up config files in the future. Argh!)

Everything seems to be working again: samba, minidlna, webmin, etc. But, one difference: I don't see ALARM showing up in the Windows Vista "Network"/"Network Neighborhood". Nor does it appear in my mac, under "shares" like it used to. However, I am able to access the Samba share by typing the path into the windows explorer or mapping a network drive. (MiniDLNA does appear in the Windows network, however.)

So, Samba is working... but windows doesn't see it in the network. I have to specifically point windows explorer at it (e.g., "\\ALARM\"). Not a huge problem... Does anyone have a suggestion of where to look for a solution? I tried searching...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This may help: http://archlinuxarm.org/support/guides/ ... ions/samba
See part on reducing memory usage and do the opposite. Check also the DAEMONS line of your /etc/rc.conf

Personally I would just create a network shortcut to the share of your Pogo on the Windows Explorer rather than paying a toll on the performance on a system that has only 256M of RAM.
