USB Serial Adapter questions

I'm working on a home control project that uses an X10 controller with a serial port. I dug up an old USB serial adapter that I had lying around. I plugged it in and the Pogoplug seems to recognize it ok, but I noticed that the adapter quickly gets warm to the touch.

My question for anyone else who is using a USB serial adapter is whether it's normal for these things to get warm? I'm concerned that I might burn out the power supply in my Pogoplug if this thing draws too much power. Anybody have any suggestions about this?

I have a USB to serial to my serial X10 controller plugged into my Pogo E02 (USB serial does not seem to work on the version 3 pogos) and it works just fine. Honestly, I cannot tell where the USB to TTL conversion is done in my cable as the USB end looks like any standard USB end and the serial end looks pretty standard too. In any case, I have no heat issues at all.

To control X10, I have a java program which requires a serial library (RXTX) to bridge java and the serial driver. But it works well.
