PP-E02 vs PPv4 - alARM + Samba + miniDLNA

Postby rino » Sun Mar 03, 2013 7:07 pm

I have PP-E02 running with alARM + Samba + miniDLNA & Pogoplug software on it as well. The whole setup is working pretty good. I have WD 1tb drive with USB3.0 - however, PP-E02 only has USB2.0 ports on it.

I recently bought PPv4 but haven't opened the box yet. I am wondering ... if I flash PPv4 with alARM + Samba + miniDLNA & Pogoplug software on it attached with WD USB3.0 drive ... will I see any performance difference? Will the difference be good or bad?

I am pretty happy with my current setup, but the only thing is USB3.0 support on PPv4 vs USB2.0 support on PP-E02 - will it really make a big difference in the performance when transferring file across the network - I have gigabit router as well.

Also, I believe PP-EO2 has 256Mb RAM vs PPv4 has only 128Mb RAM on it (I wonder why given PPv4 is a newer model) - will that be a factor in degraded performance if I switch to PPv4?

Thanks in advance for the ones who will respond back :)

Samba will be slower, don't know about minidlna.

The reason why it is slower is because PPv4 has 800MHz CPU (slower ram as well) vs 1.2GHz in v2, and while you may see an increase in raw speed from the HDD to the device, given the overhead samba imposes to the CPU, it will be slower. There are some tests on this forum. As for miniDLNA, I am not sure, it only serves files at their bitrate anyway, so it does not matter.

Thanks moonman for the response. I was thinking along the same lines as well, which is why I was hesitant to open my new PPv4. I think I'll just stick with my E02, and sell the PPv4 :)

Thanks again for your quick response. Appreciate it.
