MDIO what is it used for?

Postby godofdream » Sat Mar 09, 2013 4:20 pm

I compiled the new 3.8.2 Kernel and detected the option for the Marvell MDIO driver which is used for kirkwood devices.
What is it for? Could any speedup of ethernet be achieved, similar to the cryptodev?

My guess is that it has something to do with power management rather than performance.
