All things samba and 1st steps after install

Postby LinuxNOOB » Sun Apr 07, 2013 6:43 pm

Hi all,

thank you to moonman and pepedog for helping with the install, turned out to be the USB stick i was using wasn't happy. However i did use some amended script from moonman on creating the filesystem.

Now, you will have to excuse me as I am trying desperately hard to get my head around linux and networking, but i'm looking for an up to date walkthrough on the steps needed to turn my modded dockstar into a full blown USB hard drive NAS. I would like for it to be a full access server from any type of machine? I dont know if this is an unrealistic propostion, please tell me if i'm wrong and i will stop now!

I can find no clear information on automounting and also im struggling with the samba share, bearing in my mind i am a novice! :D

Any info on those steps after initial install would be so so so appreciated.

thanks,

Chris

Just glanced through the blog, sterling effort my friend, just what i was looking for...

Just to clarify do all USB hard drives have to be formmatted before using?

interesting work with airplay, i use an openelec xbmc pc for airplay, which is one of the main reasons i wanted the server for media storage and multiroom.

I was going to use one with time machine for mac, or am i underestimating the work involved for that to happen?!

You are doing some amazing work here guys, much appreciated!!
