Serial port on the PC is not TTL level. You either need to get a converter RS232 -> TTL or a USB-> TTL adapter.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jonnojohnson', '@')matthuisman I'm curious how you ended up hooking up physically to the PPv4? I have a serial port on my pc so I suppose I could just hack a serial cable and solder but I'd like to do something tidier in case I ever have to do this again.

Your pc serial port use 12v logic, the serial port of the pogoplug use 3.3v logic, it would be really bad idea to connect these two.

You'll need an usb ttl adapter like this one http://www.adafruit.com/products/954
just don't connect the vcc, you don't need and its voltage is 5v, similar devices available on ebay.

Ahh of course. Can anyone recommend how to connect those tips to the PP v4?

Soldering ?
You will want to practice a little if you haven't solder before.

Another idea involves a binder clip, piece of paper and conductive ink.

My soldering is pretty terrible but I might know some folks who could help.
I'd really like to solder down a header on the PPv4 rather than strip of those black connectors and solder wires directly to it. The PPv4 seems to have 2mm pitch spacing. Anyone soldered a header to it?

My experience in the matter is limited but I don't think this is good idea.
You'll need some kind of smt header but it will only be held by the 4 serial solder pads and any pressure from the header could damage the pads.
Better solder some wires and tape them to the board for support.
You'll only need the serial port to be able to boot from serial if your uboot is corrupted and to set the netconsole (if you didn't/can't set it from linux), after your netconsole is set you really don't need the serial.
(allot of info about netconsole in this forum and the doozan forums).
