v2/v4: Transfer Speed w/ HFS+ Netatalk/AFP?

Postby Tres » Sun May 26, 2013 12:20 am

Hey guys,

I want to share the HFS+ formatted disks in my USB 3.0/eSATA 4-bay hard drive enclosure (in JBOD mode) via Netatalk/AFP. The only use for this machine would be streaming media to my mediacenter Mac Mini and backing up two laptops via Time Machine. So basically my only priority is read/write speed.

Which PP would make more sense for this (E02, regular v4, mobile)? I read that even though the v4 has got USB 3.0 it's not supposed to make much difference compared to the v2. Does anyone have a similar setup or a different one and can tell me about their speed? Also, does JBOD mode slow me down in any way?

Thanks,
t

Go for E02, it will be faster. HFS+ will likely slow you down as it isn't native to linux and you will need to disable journaling before you can write to it.

Thanks, reformatting would be an option I guess if I just keep my Time Machine partition in HFS+. Do you guys have a rough estimate on how fast ext4 is in comparison to HFS+?
