I've been using the pogoplug with arch mainly as a home server, that is just to access files from within the network. Suppose I decide to setup VPN or SSH from outside of my network, does this raise security concerns by allowing acccess to my router from outside of my network?

If you set things up insecurely...it will be insecure. Just like any other Linux box.
