Best cheap box?

Postby tukra » Sun Jan 05, 2014 5:33 pm

Hello All,

I have been running a POGO-B01(Oxnas) for a couple of years now and noticed it's Arch build has been end of lifed due to lack of systemd support. I'm thinking of getting a new or backup box because I can't imagine living without one anymore. I see the pink v4 is available for $20 but wanted to check in and see if folks think this is the best box to get these days. My priorities are low price and good linux support. The v4 seems like a good fit but maybe there's something else out there that's another good option.

Thanks!

The V4 (get the V4, not the mobile V4-A1) is a Kirkwood based device and we have official support for booting to the USB 2.0 or SATA ports. It is slower (800MHz vs 1200MHz or 1600MHz) than other Kirkwood bases devices on the market, but for the price, is a nice little box with a lot of capability. Some people have even modded it to add the second SATA channel as eSATA (not for feint of heart).

Other options are:
- The trusty Pogoplug V2, which is USB only. (~$20-30)
- NSA3xx family, the 325 and 320 are officially supported. ($80-140)
-- The 325 has the bonus of being 1.6GHz and has USB3, 2x 3.5" SATA drive trays, boots from SATA.
- Many other supported devices on our list.

Thanks WarHeadsSE,

I found an already U-Booted E02 on eBay for $28. Thanks for the suggestion about it being faster then the v4. I looked around at other possibilities but I couldn't find anything else in this price range other than pogos.

Tukra,
Just curious, what do you use your Pogoplugs for?

I use my Pogoplug V4-A3 as a file server (samba & nfs), ntp server for my lan and DLNA server (running minidlna). It works very well.
