No LED when booting, have I bricked it?

Postby opet » Sun Feb 27, 2011 10:06 pm

Ok. So my plug has been running for the last six months. I figured I update some packages and followed the new post on the front page. Only problem was that I didnt have enough space left on the partition, so the install didnt really go as planned. I rebooted and the plug booted into the original os. I then wiped the hd and tried to install over. Long story short, reinstalled uboot, but mke2fs wouldnt run, so I rebooted. Thats the last ive seen of it.

No lights. No SSH. No IP in router. Nothing.

What to do?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'r')einstalled uboot

Which method did you use to reinstall the uboot? There has been some chop and change in the wiki, so it isn't entirely clear from your description which instructions you were using. Was it the "ubit_start" method or the "install_uboot-mtd0.sh" method?

If no lights at all, it is likely to be a brick and need JTAG.

I did the "install_uboot-mtd0.sh".

Ive read quite a few posts about JTAG, but dont think I completely grasp the concept. I know you need a cable, but do you assemble it yourself? And can I use a mac on the other end, or do I need a linux box?

Sorry for all the questions. Im not too experienced with this, but I hate to give up on something that I believe can be fixed. And I really appreciate all the help.

This is pretty much the same situation as I find myself in: magenta pogoplug that can’t be communicated with, won’t do anything, won’t light, won’t boot into anything at all. Similarly, if it can be fixed, it’ll have to be fixed from OS X. It all sounds a bit too complex and badly documented at this stage to have confidence in a clear path to rescuing it, so mine’s in the attic until it behaves again.

JTAG is the interface standard that lets you "reset the chip" into a mode where it can run some very basic commands. The most useful of these is that it can load a file from a connected PC into memory and then run that file. Having bricked the device, you load up a known, good U-Boot into memory and then you can start issuing commands from the U-Boot prompt.

U-Boot (run from RAM) has commands to rewrite flash memory, so it can write a new copy of itself into flash and you should be back to a plug which at least shows an LED on startup. If you write a UBIT U-Boot, it will automatically start using its netconsole settings without further configuration, so you can shut the case of the Pogoplug at this stage and start following instructions to install Arch Linux ARM install.
