Migrating ArchLinux from Sata to USB - Pogoplug series 4

Postby Atmosfear » Fri Jul 10, 2015 8:13 pm

Hello,

I am trying to migrate my ArchLinux installation from my SATA hard drive to my USB (2.0) on my pogoplug series 4.

First, I followed this tutorial for my archlinux installation :
http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv5 ... g-series-4

And then I installed the same way another ArchLinux on my USB and I used cp -a to copy all from my old sata drive to my new usb.

If I boot only with my USB it blinks green and if I boot with my SATA it works wonderfully.
Do I need to change something on my uboot configuration to make this work?

Then, does any of you have any idea of how to factory reset my Pogoplug series 4 so I can do the whole process all over again but with my USB drive instead?

Have you tried looking at the instructions?
http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv5 ... g-series-4

I recommend reading all three tabs, but what you are after is on the "advanced" tab

Yeah, I have already done this tutorial : http://archlinuxarm.org/support/reinstallation.

But it seems to apply only for a similar drive (SATA->SATA or USB->USB) and it didnt work in the end.

In the advanced tab, they warn you that it is not a procedure for "simply reinstalling the root filesystem to start over" and this is exactly what I am trying to do, starting over but maybe I have to try this method because it seems to be the only way. After this, I could install ArchLinux over the original firmware.

There is an important difference between the reinstall procedure and the install procedure( probably a mistake in the reinstall).

The normal install has you partition to ext3, the reinstall says to do ext4. My suggestion is to do the reinstall again, but use mkfs.ext3, not mkfs.ext4, and make sure you are getting the correct filesystem

wget http://archlinuxarm.org/os/ArchLinuxARM ... est.tar.gz

If you do that it should work, unless its a non-compatible usb drive. Many thumb drives won't work. I've found at least one external usb case that didn't work.
