Hard disk failure - warranty?

Postby parkway » Wed Aug 10, 2011 4:10 pm

Hi all,

I'm a first time poster.

I've had my Seagate GoFlex Home (2tb) for 4 months. I run Archlinux on my desktop so I didn't hesitate installing Arch Linux ARM on the Seagate. Yesterday I couldn't stream a movie from minidlna so I ssh'd in and ls reported i/o error's. fsck just hung on pass 1 and remounting the disc reported bad super block.

If I rebooted, I could access the drive for a short time before it reported i/o errors. I've been trying to pull data off today but now I cannot seem to access the drive at all.

dmesg reports:

[ 8.513293] ata1: SATA max UDMA/133 irq 21
[ 13.261102] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Asking for cache data failed
[ 13.276222] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Asking for cache data failed
[ 13.291846] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Asking for cache data failed
[ 14.057289] ata1: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0)
[ 18.557289] ata1: SRST failed (errno=-16)
[ 24.107288] ata1: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0)
[ 28.607286] ata1: SRST failed (errno=-16)
[ 34.157288] ata1: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0)
[ 63.617287] ata1: SRST failed (errno=-16)
[ 63.621331] ata1: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps
[ 68.627289] ata1: SRST failed (errno=-16)
[ 68.631335] ata1: reset failed, giving up

It looks like the drive is completely dead now. I've tried connecting it to my desktop pc and it's not picking it up at all.

My biggest question is.. where do I stand in terms of warranty? The disc is at fault, not the plug computer. But I'm guessing I voided the warranty when I switched to "arch".

Any insight would be most welcomed.

Thanks.

I'm not really sure why I just put myself through the effort of searching on google

Thanks for the reply. I already tried that. It states that the drive is OEM, that it's part of a "system" and I should contact the seller. My question was.. Have I invalidated the warranty by installing Arch Linux ARM. I think I have.. which is silly because it's not the plug computer at fault but the hard drive. It's that I want replacing. But it looks like I have to replace the whole unit.

I think I'm just gonna box it up and send it back, and cross my fingers they replace it.

Meanwhile, it would be nice to pull my data off it. I cannot believe it's failed after 4 months and most of the time it's been "asleep". I was having a play with it last night and managed to run seatools on it. It passed the quick test but failed on the long one. I wish it would stay "online" long enough for me to extract my data from it. Weird. Because it's spinning and not making any unusual noises. I'm thinking, perhaps the PCB is at fault.. The Seagate GoFlex does get very hot when in use and perhaps it's damaged it. Sometimes the BIOS picks it up and I can mount it but I get a garbaged file listing and it "loses link". Most of the time, it's not detected despite powering up. I am wondering if a USB->SATA adaptor would work? I've had no such experience with one. There's got to be some way to get the data off.

Where did you buy it, and how long ago?
