Pogoplug V2 (pink) no light no SSH [Resolved]

Postby triviadave » Thu Aug 18, 2011 8:28 pm

I have just followed the guide to install Arch on my pink Pogoplug.

Everything seemed to go ok during the install (the sync step was very quick though, reading the guide I expected that to take some time), but when I tried rebooting the power LED on the front didn't come on at all. I have tried rebooting several times and have yet to see a light if I have a USB drive attached. If I try to ssh in to the device (from Linux Mint desktop) it gives the following message:
"ssh: connect to host <my ip> port 22: No route to host". Both network adapter lights come on though, and I have once seen the activity light flash on the USB drive.

If I disconnect the USB drive, the device seems to boot up correctly (flashing green light, followed by stable green light). I am able to ssh in to the device, but can do nothing (the prompt I see is "Pogoplug: ~$" ) as there is no drive attached.

I have tried using arp to discover the status of the device, and when it boots with the USB drive attached the HWaddress is listed as (incomplete), when booted with no USB drive, the MAC address is shown in the HWaddress.

Have I done something wrong, or is it just hardware incompatibility? I have seen other threads that complain about Kingston USB drives, but nothing quite like this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Dave

I am not sure what I did before, but I have just gone through the process with another USB drive and it has worked perfectly. Maybe it was just a problem with the Kingston USB drive.

@triviadave: I am pretty much where you were when you posted the OP (see http://goo.gl/ak2Qe). And yes, the sync step was pretty much instantaneous, which I find quite alarming. You say changing the USB dongle helped? Did you do the whole thing again from scratch using another USB drive? Was the sync step in this second case slower?

P.S. The USB key I used was made by Transcend. Go figure!

Here's one more question: Step 10 says that one should log back "after your Pogoplug reboots" etc. Should I assume that the Pogoplug will automatically reboot after doing step 9? Or should I hard reboot it?

The Pogoplug will reboot after you enter "/sbin/reboot" in Step 8. As a result you will also be disconnected. You should never hard reboot. Step 9 is performed on the computer you use to connect to the Pogoplug via SSH and has no effect on the Pogoglug.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('hydro', 'T')he Pogoplug will reboot after you enter "/sbin/reboot" in Step 8. As a result you will also be disconnected. You should never hard reboot. Step 9 is performed on the computer you use to connect to the Pogoplug via SSH and has no effect on the Pogoglug.

Thanks. I take it, then, that step #9 is only for Linux and Macs, hence Windows computers may just skip it, right? Also, after step 8 (the reboot), should I assume that PogoPlug has different login credentials than what it had before? Meaning it now has root/root as opposed to root/<whatever>?

At least to the credentials, yes.

Alright folks, I've tried four different dongles (a 1G Transcend, a 1G noname, a 16G Corsair, and a newly purchased 4G PNY), none of them works with this thing. I'm becoming desperate. After the 8th step reboot, Pogoplug just cannot be found on the network (while the USB dongle is plugged in, that is). It's as if it doesn't boot off the USB dongle or something. Could it be that it may have changed its IP? How could this be possible, as I have reserved the IP for its MAC...

Without the USB dongle it boots just fine, and is accessible via SSH with the usual login data.

Please help. What am I doing wrong?

P.S. During the running of step #5 it complains about the large number of cylinders of the USB drive (see screenshots below). All USB flash drives I have have more cylinders than 1024. Could that be the issue?

You could enable netconsole to see the uBoot messages.
