Optware can work, and that is in fact how Arch Linux ARM originated. The reason it was completely dismissed is because of the limited environment you're left to work in, most importantly in regard to the kernel. ARM support and capability has increased dramatically in the late 2.6.30s, and most newer software requires these newer features at least indirectly. Any way you look at it, an optware setup is a compromise. And to run a distro in a chroot when you don't have to is proof positive. But if it works for you, great. We here, however, do not support such an installation.
