I found out that in my particular case, disabling any swap files or swap partitions almost doubled my transfer speed. If you have any swap files or partitions, perhaps it's worth trying to disable them... (swapoff -a)

He's got a point.. if the system is laden, and a swap file is on, your going to get the hit from the swap writes & the samba file writes... All depends on how much is running/using ram.
