goflex net doesn't boot if sata drive is plugged in..

I am thinking that i may be trying to make the sata drive be sda and rootfs sdb. my goflex is a ftp server for my eye-fi card, and i am planning on going to japan for a few years and so if the power fails i can't really go a pull out the drive and remount it while i am on the other side of the planet. i am still very new at this so any help and/or advice would be very appreciated.
