Thanks moonman. Your data means everything:
6-7MB/s for NTFS and 25MB/s for ext4

Btw, I was wrong about the samba version I was using, it is version 2, not 3.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('KennethC', 'I') also have PP Pink V3, and I even connected the SATA to my WD 750GB ext3. Getting max at 10mb/s copying a very large files over SAMBA. Thinking a PP V4 will give me faster speed, but it ended up slower. Um!

The main limiting factor of these devices os the slow arm cpu. Pp v4 has a cpu clocked at 0.8ghz vs pp v2 1.2ghz, so ot will be slower. Try dd-wrt/tomato router with samba2 and its slow MIPS cpu. You will be lucky to get 5mB/s out of it.

Thanks Moonman for your command! Here is what I found about the CPU usage though..

I used "top" command and watched the CPU usage on my PPV4 while transferring a 7GB file from my Windows 7 machine to EXT4 HD via SATA. CPU did went up to 40-50% but still have 40% left unused.
On PPV3, doing exactly same thing, CPU went up to around 30-40%.

Both are max @ 9-10mb/s. No idea why. But if I transfer file to my NTFS HD, there is another process - "mount.ntfs" which will take up 60-70% of CPU and the max speed was 4mb/s, and CPU was running @ 100%.

I installed the latest ArchLinux w/ Samba, minidlna, hd-idle only following the guide mostly.
I may have to try a different Linux system like optware on PPV3 just to see if that makes any difference.

I have a pogo P21 (V3) with SATA attached 5400 RPM laptop drive, ext3, and overclocked to 850 MHz, running samba 3. I transferred a 5.49 GB file both directions to/from my much faster desktop machine, both connected to same Gbps switch.

From P21's point of view:
write (desktop to P21) 269 seconds; 19.4 MiB/s
read (P21 to desktop) 152 seconds; 34.4 MiB/s

Thanks Karog, seems everyone is getting at least 20mb/s write speed. But me! I wonder if it is my Belkin N600 router that's limiting the transfer speed, but again, when I run "dd" test, it shows similar write speed.

Karog, do you do anything special to your PPV3?

NTFS is a major limiting factor. After that comes the upper limit of the system, and whether your switch can actually hit that.

Nothing beyond what I already mentioned ie SATA, ext3, 850 MHz, 256 MB swap. The laptop drive is directly SATA connected, no enclosure.

Switch is a DLink DGS-1008G.

I have the P21, a B01 (V3) and an E02 (V2). I run mythbackend on all 3 with an HDHomeRun Prime and an HDHomeRun Dual. mythbackend was running when I did the xfer test but it wasn't doing much at the time ie not recording or being played by a mythfrontend. For mythtv I run mysqld on the B01 and I run transmission on the E02 which I also have USB to serial connected to my X10 controller.

My desktop machine is a hackintosh and I used its velociraptor (10K rpm) drive for the test.

Thank you moonman and karog for the valuable information.

Just wanted to post an updates, I ended up getting a Gigabit switch and connected my PC to the PPV4. Now, I am able to write at 20mb/s to a Ext4 harddrive with SATA port. So it was the Belkin router that's limiting the speed.

Thanks!

I had enabled BFQ. Maybe that's why I was getting better write speeds. My CPU is always maxed out when doing transfers with samba. And my router/switch is definitely not limiting it as I get 60MB/s from a PC to PC.
