Just to be sure, you have confirmed that smbd & nmbd are running.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WarheadsSE', 'J')ust to be sure, you have confirmed that smbd & nmbd are running.

Yes, when issuing ps -A the smbd is listed
nmbd is not; as the install instructions for samba here on alARM suggested disabling it.

And its got me confused, because uninstalled samba pacman -R samba
but there are 2 smbd processes running

Sidenote: I'm not seeing anything relating to "kirkwood"
linux-firmware 20121118-1
linux-headers 3.1.10-15
are installed, nothing about linux-kirkwood.

Then try connecting \\ip.of.your.plug\

Uninstalling doesn't stop the process. That's your job.

And it isn't about being on the kirkwood specific forward kernel, but the device itself being a kirkwood SoC.

I tried connecting via the IP but no luck there either...

I meant to say even though I uninstalled (pacman -R) Samba, on reboot there are still 2 Smbd processes running (I did issue kill [Process ID] before rebooting (power cycle)

I hate to say it, but I think its come to the point that I must abandon alARM and revert back to the crappy PP way of doing things, as I am still after almost a week unable to get samba to function at all, not even a hint it working...

The fact that it is still running after rebooting, tells me something is botched.

What I would do is:

stop samba via rc.d
install samba via pacman
remove samba via pacman
edit rc.config removing "smbd"
restart

If samba is still starting after that ... nuke from orbit, it's possessed.

This might be using systemd instead of rc.d style sysvinit !

No clue what could be botched, as I've reverted and reinstalled alARM twice now...

minidlna works great, no problems there...
but samba just refuses to work..

they are the only 2 things I need functioning... 1 out of 2 is not good, since I kinda need them both. 1 to supply media to devices, the other to add media to be supplied.

I was really hoping to get this to work, since I really hate that the PP firmware puts everything in the "cloud"(online) even though I'm only accessing it within the house... which is ridiculous.

Do me a favor,
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'systemctl')
And tell me what you get. A lot, or "no connection to dbus" or the like.

My samba runs fine and only required systemctl enable smbd
Found in the past if I changed settings best to remove some things, eg
systemctl stop smbd
rm -r /var/lib/samba/*
systemctl start smbd
A good service to have installed and running is avahi-dnsconfd
These is samba.conf can make a network with sharing windows machines settle done quick
local master = no
os level = 65
domain master = yes
