I meant I've only booted from the hdd that came with it. Would you suggest getting a RMA from Seagate, or trying to return it at costco, where I bought it?

You said you tried booting from a USB device as well... :?

Anyway, I would try to return it to costco. If that doesn't work then you have to revert the device to a factory bootloader, otherwise when you RMA it to seagate they will see that you messed with it and won't do anything about it since you probably voided the warranty by messing with the bootloader.

I tried, but it didn't work. The kernel did load, but the rest of the system (namely sshd) didn't finish booting.

I'll try my luck at costco this weekend. So there isn't much hope in recovering my data?

Don't worry, Costco will take it back. Seagate won't even look at it :-) I think they will just reflash it using factory procedure.

To recover data you have to take the drive out of the enclosure. If you do, then be very careful not to make any visible damages to the enclosure (don't use screwdriver to pull the sides apart, use something plastic). Then you'll be able to use your enclosure to connect it to a PC.

Thanks for the info, hopefully I'll have my NAS back up by the end of the weekend. I already opened it, but there just is one little scratch from the tool and it's pretty hard to notice.

I can't find a desktop computer to connect the drive to. Would I just be wasting my time if I tried to get the NAS to boot from a usb drive, just so I could transfer the files off?

you dont need a desktop unless you dont have usb to sata cable/enclosure. if you dont, get one at a store with a good retuen policy and return it when you are done. Usb booting ahould work though if its just the drive thats at fault.
