@Geof,
Initially I never had a problem with bsdtar till one day it gave me errors so I started using tar and got those errors which I was able to find a band-aid fix. So all is good on that front.

@Socaltom,
I believe you are right. So many variables to look at that may cause problems with the installation. User and hardware alone is already a huge factor. Specially a Noob like me at the helm. That being said, i just wanted to know where I've gone wrong so that I would better understand how Linux works.

Right now my Pogoplug is running Arch Linux ARM with Samba, MariaDB, Php, Webmin and PhpMyAdmin running fine. I'm working on installing an FTP Server.

Still, the REBOOT and SHUTDOWN command remains a conundrum. Not knowing where I went wrong and what to do to fix it looms in my head. Thank you all for the inputs and I do hope that one day I might be able to write down the solution so that we can close this. Peace Brothers!

Ok, for all those looking at this post...
It seems the problem lies on my USB Hard Disk Drive. I formatted 2 USB Sticks and REBOOT and SHUTDOWN seems to work on them. My USB Hard Drive, after being formatted countless of times, I noticed that after issuing the reboot command, the front light would turn off and after a minute I noticed that the USB Hard Drive Busy Light turned on briefly then ... NOTHING!

Many thanks to Socaltom, you gave me the lead for this. i believe that this case is closed.
