could be a dcron if installation was done a long long time ago, like my pink pogo. dcron is still in repos, but cronie became default after.

I don't know when it has been removed but crond.service has anyway disappeared from 'systemctl list-units'

Thats because there is no crond.service. See the upstream Systemd wiki article

the service for dcron is "dcron.service", not crond.service. So you would either have cronie.service or dcron.service, cronie being most likely. In sysvinit you would use "crond" for both.
