Plug in USB keyboard. You can log in and type blind.
Even more important ctrl-alt-del reboots (without login), see if network comes up.
Never assume you will get same ip address

fgina,
Upon fresh installation the color is Orange and will stay orange unless you add some lines to change it green. There are mods to have it flash colors when it is accessing a drive.

Looks like other people are having this same problem. Maybe something is a little different with these P22/E02. I haven't had a chance to mess with mine but will see.

Ok.....I can reboot with control alt delete.....!! So at least it is working inside.....

Tried.....blind typing the following:

root

I can see it doing stuff after I type, as the usb key is flashing.....but still cant ping it or putty in.....

Did I type the right thing...? Any more ideas...?

OK.....I finally got online with it...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG.....3 days of frustration. I was looking in my router DHCP list, and I was looking for the PoGo Plug at the MAC address on the bottom of it.

When I boot up WITHOUT the USB key, the MAC is correct in the list, and I can ping it at that address.

When I boot up WITH the key....the MAC address is still in the list....so I assumed it was the same IP address, as I didnt expire the IP addresses. BUT....I noticed that there were a lot of MAC address in the list, that STARTED with a similar sequence....and then I noticed that every time I restarted the Pogo that another new MAC came in. So on a whim, I pinged the latest IP with the latest MAC....and it pinged, so I Putty'd to that IP address....and it gave me the ROOT command....!!!!!!

How is it returning the Incorrect MAC address...?????? See below a snapshot.

Sorry if I am just plain stupid about this stuff.....

Can you navigate, instead of IP address, by name of alarm (the hostname)?

Ok.....searched the forums here and found that I could enter the MAC address as below:

fw_setenv ethaddr 'xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx' and I setup a Fixed IP Profile, and now it is working correctly with my IP and my correct MAC.

Still cant use HOSTNAME to putty in....have to keep working on that one.

Thanks again....!!

Steve, u r not. I m a net admin. I know how dhcp and dns works. It's the most basic stuff. While installing arch, I tried windows server dhcp, with/without MAC address lock. wifi router's dhcp with/without Mac lock, some other simple dhcp server for simple troubleshooting which i used times before. I also tried using Ip scanner tool to scan my whole subnet making sure the pogo isn't sneaking under some other ips. The way alarm's networking implementation is tricky in combinations with pogoplug. Dhcp is too simple of a protocol it was designed to just work. It's not fair to blame alarm since i dont have console output to prove anything. But after 30 hours of experiences playing with it, what I can suggest to other users is, reboot your wifi router to clear out any DHCP entries, then power on your pogoplug so any previous DHCP assignments were cleared out. up until now, I am still not sure why my device did not work for 2 days then suddenly worked at last.

Putty might need a '.' at the end of the hostname.

Ok....got it all working....!! thanks again so much.

I also had bought a new router with a gig switch and so I set those up too....and gave it a fixed IP reservation for the pogoplug. I am now doing a backup of our main computer over the Pogo NAS....sweet...!!

Got webadmin running....now that is a great way to access everything.

So how would I access this from work...?? OpenVPN...?

Regards,
Steve

Steve,

if your home internet doesn't have a static ip, most likely, just register a free domain name using providers like DynDNS or no-ip. they all have free tier dns registration service hoping for a paid up sell on you. using your router, most routers these days are capable to post back current WAN ip to those dns service providers. if not, get a ddwrt compatible or ubnt device. that's how you hit your home network using a domain name like steve.freedns.no-ip.com. vpn is complicated from work, unless you are the network admin, the ports are most likely blocked.
