The problem is kmod:

These *work* with kmod installed.

In the mean time, all those with v5 devices, I have bundled them from a v6 (oxnas) and placed them http://ppl.ug/E0HZaDPs5i8/dl/data

Extracting these files (INTO /lib/modules/3.1.10-1-ARCH/ !!) will grant you module dependencies for the kirkwood kernel. This will last until depmod -a is run and kmod's depmod output breaks it all again.

This is for working WITH kmod
As always, no warranty implied. Make backups.

Anyway - the fun keeps rolling recently. Upgraded samba and now, the plug works fine until I try to copy something to the samba share and then all bets are off and it crashes the system completely every time with nothing left to do but power cycle (keyboard ctrl-alt-del doesn't restart).

P.S. Your module file replacements work a treat from what I can tell. lsmod shows everything I expect again, and dmesg looks good too.

Thanks for the workaround!

The files provided by WarheadsSE are working fine for me.

Big thanks to the alarm team :)

I think this should be a separate thread

Kmod has been updated. It works now.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'pacman -Sy kmod')

You'd understand if some of us were skeptical ;)
Are we ok for a pacman -Syu ?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WarheadsSE', 'K')mod has been updated. It works now.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'pacman -Sy kmod')

I was just going to report this, after updating the kernel to address the network crash for Samba I thought for sure I was going to have to do the modules workaround but it amazingly came back properly on it's own. Happy friday!

A patch to fix the problem (unaligned memory access) was submitted by ambro718 on IRC yesterday, and it definitively solves the issue of kmod generating dependencies properly. We will keep this patch moving forward until it either gets integrated by the kmod developers or they change the way they're tracking dependency hashes for building the lists that is safe for v5 systems.

Short version: it all works now, it's safe to -Syu.

@ kmihelich: thanks for the info.

Does this patch also fix the booting problem on the Dockstar and a few other Kirkwood machines, ie. the problem that seems as if it is associated with the compression of the kernel image?

If so, could you please direct me to where I can get the patch... would like to try it out on 3.2.4 or 3.3-rc2.

thnx, davy

This patch is specifically related to kmod, and the issue with correctly generating modules.dep. The patch is located on our github.

The booting issue with 3.2/3.3 is a whole other issue, and one I'm just avoiding for the time being because I just don't have the time to investigate it further right now. We're staying at 3.1.10.
