2nd eSATA in Pogoplug Mobile

Postby Sergeanter » Sun Apr 30, 2017 7:40 pm

Per a request I have taken some pictures of the 2nd eSATA cable I added to Pogoplug Mobile (V4) a while ago.
You can see 1st eSATA port added here
https://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=6040
Pin sequence for the 2nd port is below . TP23 is the SATA1 pin closest to the connector key, the rest is in natural sequence TP23-TP26
https://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=6202#p36611
SOC pinout is here in page #59 . You can trace SATA1 pins #57,58,60 and 62 of the SOC to TP23-26 ( I dont remember exact order)

You would need to solder SMD caps of 10nF to 100nF value vertically on TP23-TP26 pads . I have cut the motherboard side connector of an eSATA bracket, exposed the coax lines , wrapped bare end of the cable around the edge of Pogo PCB and glued it to the back side. I have used two pairs of a thin ribbon cable to interconnect between tops of previously soldered caps and tips of eSATA cable . The whole mess was then tacked with hot glue. In order to bias up the second SATA port of the SOC you need to install 0 Ohm jumper at the position of R213 on the top side of the board. Solder eSATA cable shield to ground . Since integrity of coax lines is somewhat violated , you may need a ferrite bead on the eSATA cable you use to connect external enclosure. A ferrite bead can be cut out of a surplus monitor cable. I apologize for the poor quality of pictures but it took quite an effort to put these cables in and I do not want to completely disassemble this contraption.

In order to enable second port, number of ports needs to be changed in dts file here (line#118)
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/arch/arm/boot/dts/kirkwood-pogoplug-series-4.dts
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'nr-ports = <2>;')
