Usenet 100Mb download with SSL question

Postby Blexley » Sun Nov 27, 2011 10:19 am

Is the PogoPlug or the other devices that use the Kirkwood powerful enough to download from Usenet / Newsgroups at 100Mb speed with SSL enabled. ?

I've seen posts on other forums from users that use older NAS drives with a 700MHz CPU say that their download speeds drop from 30Mb to under 1Mb with SSL enabled and a couple of others on the older 400MHz/266MHz boxes drop right down to 100kb sec with SSL.

I don't use Usenet so I can't say, but I can point out that I've not been able to download anything at 100Mb/s.

I just tested SCP from a GFN pulling a 148MB file from a Pro, and got 7.3MB/s ~58.4Mb/s and in the other direction got 6.9MB/s ~ 55.2Mb/s

Just tested a large file to a trimslice H250 with internal usb drive, 10 Mb/s
I am confused, I run innd usenet servers (on plugs), but only local groups, and have peered them, suppose you don't mean this or even leafnode, but some bz type program?

Using SSL is going to slow down speeds on plugs, plain and simple. There just isn't sufficient horsepower to handle it at higher speeds. Running on USB will also compound the issue, as well as however many connections you're spawning. These are not high-performance machines, contrary to the expectations of most people. They are embedded devices with limited resources, especially compared to even budget x86 computers. If high speeds are critical for you, don't use a plug for the job.

That is a a shame as i had hoped for a low powered fanless box i could leave on running NZBget or SABnzbd+ during the night.

Looks like i will have to go down the Mini-itx route but i dare say i will still get a Plug as something to play linux shell with. :)

Thanks all for your replys and transfer results it has helped me decide on what to do.

You can definitely use the plug for that purpose, you just won't get blistering speeds. If you're just downloading random stuff overnight, maxing out your connection shouldn't really be an issue.

I see there is now a Kernel for Marvell Orion devices.

viewtopic.php?f=27&t=1400&p=8110

I might dig out my old Linkstation and have a play with that before i buy a plug if i can find an step by step idiot install guide as i've only ever used Apt-get / Optware with the standard firmware.

I wonder if this would be of any help...
http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/seagate/doc ... celeration

I don't even know if ALARM has CESA already installed installed.
But reading that article from openwrt, it sure looks like CESA does help a lot improoving krypted communications.
Can anyone clarify?
TIA
Cheers

PS: but I bet you will never get close to 100Mb with SSL. And if you could get half way through it would always be with nzbget. SAB simply hasn't been optimized for CPU usage and I'm afraid it's not in their plans for the near future.
