Did a brick my v4?

Postby tgz » Mon Jan 23, 2012 1:51 am

Hello everyone,

I went through the installation instructions on this page: http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv5 ... g-series-4,
but I didn't realize I had my usb stick in the back port, not the top port like I was suppoed to.

I have tried going through the reverting instructions but unfortunately that has not worked.

Is there a way for me to save this thing?

Thanks.

I know what it said. Did you post just to remind me of the mistake I made, or do you have any ideas on how I can fix this?

YES.

Stick the damn usb stick with the rootfs on it in the top port and boot it up.

I wasn't mocking you, I was instructing you.

I already formatted the USB stick to follow the revert instructions.

Can you point me to a link on where to get the rootfs and how to install it?

Thank you and my apologies.

Simply: download the rootfs tarball, extract it as root, not sudo. Use `sudo su` if you have to.

Fire up a linux computer/vm/livecd and follow step 9.

Ok I followed your steps but I am still getting the flashing green light.

Any other ideas?

Unfortunately I find myself in the exact same situation. I did do the initial setup with my USB stick plugged into the top of the back two ports - having never taken the cover off my v4, I thought this is what was meant by the top USB port! However, the entire process seemed to work without a hitch, up to the point of rebooting, of course.

Since then, I've tried booting the same stick in the proper port on the top - no dice. I even tried going through step 9 again in case alarm wasn't installed properly on the USB stick. Still no boot.

The behaviour of my PogoPlug is that it flashes green LED on the front after turning on, and continues to flash, while the LED on the stick itself flashes briefly then stops, the green LED still flashing... it just doesn't stop flashing ever. It never boots properly.

I'm lost :(

EDIT: Successful reversion! If you are using the same USB stick to revert, MAKE SURE you reformat it as FAT32. If you leave it as ext3 (as required by the installation instructions) and simply delete everything and make a "revert" directory, it WON'T work. The official instructions to revert do say FAT32 of course - I just missed that bit

Just confirming a fix for any other frustrated v4 owners!

If you mistakenly followed the Arch Linux ARM installation instructions with your USB stick in one of the back ports:

(1) Reformat your USB stick as FAT32
(2) Create a folder on the stick named "revert" (no quotes..!)
(3) Power on the PogoPlug with the USb stick plugged into the TOP! Wait until the green light stops flashing, it will either turn red, or start glowing solid green, eventually. Your PogoPlug is now reverted to stock.
(4) Follow install instructions from the beginning now (you don't need to reboot again)

I interpreted "top usb port" as the top port on the back. I guess I needed a big sticker on the device that says "Open here, Derp."
The fix worked fine. Thanks.
